5. CN &Editors
New CN editors are replacing the old - a team of four. CW gave TM a copy of
the email.
General discussion took place about the three UKIC publications. Question whether
people are happy with CN. Criticism that the conservator is peer reviewed and
therefore people not willing to publish in it.
CW said that he had written to people with regard to working for the committee.
Peter Martindale had offered to assist.
AH suggested finding out everyone's email address. CW has them and will contact
members making a request for help.
Our 2 editors have made a request to resign but will continue until replacements
are found. Robert Gowing agreed to temporarily take over the editorship.
Action: CW
6. PACR
AH gave a review:- 15 accreditation applications were received in the first
round including 5 from our section, 4 of whom are stone conservators.
CW said that a number of people had contacted him to discuss accreditaion and
that several of them had decided not to bother. They tend to be those with several
years of experience demotivated by the fragmentary job market within conservation.
AH said that English Heritage and CCC will only use accredited conservators
within 5 years. Sennet Professional Indemnity Ltd are to address the UKIC AGM
regarding professional indemnity for conservators.With
regard to companies on the conservation register the proprietor will have to
be accredited.
7. UKIC Structure
CW mentioned briefly the alterations in the UKIC structure:- sections have become
the charitable arm of UKIC; a new company is being set up to deal with accreditation
etc.
David Leigh has requested that the sections address the possibility of amalgamating
their indidual accounts to form one central UKIC administered account which
could attract interest.
Action: AL
8. Conservation awards
CW said UKIC possibly to administer these awards. CW thinks that this could
be incestuous - the profession administering awards to themselves. The strong
majority of those present disagreed and thought that it would enable UKIC to
get a profile.
9. Lecture Series
CW to try to get speakers for November.
Action: CW
10. CPD
Accredited members will need to get their CPD together. They may ask for the
CPD in January 2002. All the information is on the UKIC-PACR website.
11. Career paths
CW said that there is a problem with career structure. Maureen Lovering said
it was a bottom end problem - there is no pay or career structure.
It was thought that accreditation should help this.
AL commented on problems with competitive tendering. People are asked to assess
what they think is necessary for the work (specifications absent or inadequate)
leading to a huge variation in quotes.
12. Major UKIC conference/Trade
fair
Richard Pelter has mentioned the possibility that the UKIC may organise a major
international conference and trade fair. We would like section members to give
some consideration to how they would like the section to be represented.
13. Nominations
None put forward
14. Pulication of committee minutes
on the WWW
CW sought ideas. AH suggested proposals/ resolutions. CWool suggested notes
& queries.
15. New sections
Gilding is changing its name to Decorative Surfaces.
New section called Architectural Surfaces/ Historic Interiors is to be formed.
AH was concerned that this would attract people who were not conservators. He
agreed to bring up his concern at the main AGM.
