Why Create a Historic Interiors Section?
The new section was created as a response to an increasing awareness of the challenges and problems facing the conservation of historic interiors.

A wide range of conservation skills are often assembled during architectural conservation projects. Conservators from all UKIC sections often face great difficulties adhering to recognised standards which though commonplace in the museum collection or conservation studio environment are often considered as inappropriate or unrealistic once work is conducted on a building site.

Conservators can expect to find themselves working under the direction of major contractors who all too often have little or no experience and more importantly, no sympathy for the long term preservation of a building's fittings, finishes or patina. All too often once a project is underway, completion of the work on time and within the agreed budget becomes the only objective of the project.

Viewed from another perspective conservators need to acquire an understanding and respect for other professionals involved in the project and the constraints of building contracts. Much can be learned from observing the working practises and protocols of other skilled trades working on site.

Aims of the Historic Interiors Section

The Historic Interiors section hopes to:

  • Highlight the importance and rarity of decorative fittings, finishes and furnishings.

  • Establish mechanisms for better communication between conservators and other specialists working within historic interiors

Who Will Join the Section?

It is envisaged that the Historic Interiors Section may draw members from the existing sections. It may offer a home to conservators, such as wallpaper conservators or architectural paint researchers, who have not found an appropriate 'home' in existing sections. The creation of the new section may result in new members to UKIC from other professions such as conservation architects, quantity surveyors, project managers, building surveyors, interior designers and painters and decorators, who often have a critical role in the planning and conservation of historic interiors.
