Conservators from all UKIC sections often face great difficulties adhering to recognised standards which though commonplace in the museum collection or conservation studio environment are often considered as inappropriate or unrealistic once work is conducted on a building site. Conservators can expect to find themselves working under the direction of major contractors who all too often have little or no experience and more importantly, no sympathy for the long term preservation of a building's fittings, finishes or patina. All too often once a project is underway, completion of the work on time and within the agreed budget becomes the only objective of the project. Viewed from another perspective conservators need to acquire an understanding and respect for other professionals involved in the project and the constraints of building contracts. Much can be learned from observing the working practises and protocols of other skilled trades working on site.
