: THE CONFERENCE AND WHO SHOULD ATTEND

In July 2004 the United Kingdom Institute for Conservation (UKIC) will host its first general conference since 1988; an ideal opportunity for fellow professionals to meet together. The topic, Working with the Project Culture, is crucial, one on which experiences and ideas need to be pooled for the benefit of the profession as a whole.

The conference presents an opportunity for the following to share their thoughts and debate the different challenges being faced:

  • Conservators in the private and public sectors
  • Conservation scientists and researchers
  • Conservation architects, contractors, surveyors
  • Museum and gallery directors, curators, educators, designers
  • Project and contract managers
  • Archaeologists and archaeological scientists
  • Heritage fund raisers and fund managers
  • Politicians and policy makers
  • All those who are interested in conservation of our heritage

: CONFERENCE DINNER

All delegates are invited to attend the conference dinner on Thursday 8 July, which will be held in Liverpool Town Hall. Attendance is included in the registration fee but must be indicated on the registration form. A limited number of additional tickets may be purchased at £45. Please complete the appropriate section of the registration form and enclose the correct remittance, should you require additional tickets.

Liverpool Town Hall, located in the Castle Street conservation area of the city, is one of the finest surviving 18th century Town Halls in the country. Home to the Lord Mayor and host to visitors from all over the world, it is one of the city’s richest assets.

: EXHIBITION

There will be a full technical trade exhibition in support of the conference. This will be an integral feature of the event and will provide organisations with the ideal opportunity to showcase their skills and products to a focused audience. Organisations interested in participating should email [email protected]

: TECHNICAL TOUR

On Saturday 10 July, delegates and their partners will have the option to take a guided tour,
which will include the following:

  • The Conservation Centre, European Museum of the Year 1998. It was the first national conservation centre of its kind and the only one open to the public. Participants will have the opportunity to take behind the scenes tours, see the permanent galleries and meet the conservators to discuss their work;

  • Liverpool Museum to see the new Heritage Lottery Funded storage areas and some of the public spaces including the atrium which links the old museum to the newly refurbished areas. The developments at the museum represent major capital investment;

  • St George’s Hall, one of the finest neo-classical buildings in Europe, to hear about the history of the building and the current conservation and restoration work there;

  • A walking tour of Liverpool’s historic buildings and monuments. Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City is the United Kingdom’s nomination to UNESCO to become a World Heritage Site.

There will be a nominal charge of £10 per head for the tours. Delegates wishing to buy tickets for themselves, and accompanying partners, should complete the appropriate section of the registration form.
