Assessing Conservators
Assessment Criteria

Note: Onus will be on applicant to supply evidence which meets standards published by UKIC
[1] suitable practitioners
[2] suitable course
e.g. a 'Long' course, with 'recognised' qualification e.g. British
Accreditation Council for HE/FE, in the area of 'conservation' plus 'recognition'
mechanism for overseas courses etc. Back
[3] suitable training work
e.g. internships, trainee employment, etc., with 'suitable practitioners'
etc. Back
Note: Onus will be on UKIC to approve standard of proffered evidence on each occasion. However, standards used to define criteria will be published.
[4] appropriate problems
e.g. problems are 'appropriate' if they are within the level of competence
and the specialism of the applicant. A lengthy period of post-qualification
experience usually will be necessary to achieve the standard needed to undertake
completely unsupervised professional conservation practice. (Note: In the
Occupational Standards of the Museums, Galleries and Heritage Sector derived
by the profession, there are a large number of competences which describe
conservation as practised on 'simple' problems; these represent the baseline
of conservation practice). Back
[5] specialism/limits of practice
e.g. in the area(s) of 'hands-on' conservation problems or in an area(s)
which directly supports the practice of conservation e.g. administration /
management / advising / teaching / research. Back
[6] appropriate statements from sponsors
e.g. statements which endorse the applicant's ability to practise to
professional standards on appropriate problems unsupervised.
Back
[7] approval of qualification
e.g. an 'appropriate' degree-level course(s). This ultimately will need
further definition by UKIC. (Note: In the long term, UKIC aims to use the
Museums Training Institute approval of the quality of a course as a basis on
which to superimpose its own standards of approval). Back
[8] approval of completed apprenticeship
e.g. through portfolio/record of work, description and assessment of
training from the Supervisor, reference from Supervisor etc. In future, new
Apprentices may be asked to obtain NVQ Conservation Level 4.
Back
[9] approval of portfolio
e.g. for 'hands-on' practitioners, elements can be drawn from the
Occupational Standards etc. but for other conservators, further guidelines will
be needed. Back
[10] approval of references from sponsors and supervisor /
mentor / employer / clients
e.g. references which indicate sufficient standard of knowledge and
understanding as well as application of skill and professional attitude (e.g.
integrity, commitment, responsibility, self-awareness etc.) of applicant
including ability to recognise and work only on 'appropriate' problems etc.
Back
[11] approval of limits of practice / CPD Plan / Record
e.g. specialism/appropriate training, level of CPD required. etc.
Back
[12] approval of outcome of visit / interview
e.g. to include demonstration of skill and professional attitude by
applicant etc. Back
Note: These Criteria are for the long term and will not apply to any
transitional arrangements for Accreditation.
