UKIC METALS SECTION ONE DAY WORKSHOP

An Introduction to riveting
18 September, Winchester

Venue: Hampshire County Council Museum Service Conservation Workshops

Outline: This one day practical workshop will offer you the opportunity to experience the skills of hand riveting combining a selection of materials and methods. From its humble roots the rivet became pivotal to the development of Industrial design and innovation, it gave craftsman the strength and flexibility to build bigger and faster enabling them to engineer some of the most awe inspiring structures and monuments to be found throughout the modern world. Have you ever gazed at a wonderful piece of decorative iron work, a gigantic bridge or ship and wondered how it is all held together. Now is your chance!

The day will consist of a basic introduction to the engineering principles of riveting, followed by an informative tour within the extensive HCCMS collection examining specific case studies. The morning will conclude with a practical session where individual test pieces will be made utilising two common types of hand held riveting.

The afternoon session will go with a bang! This is a unique opportunity to experience hot riveting using traditional pneumatic riveting equipment. This is for real! A special test piece will be prepared offering the chance to "hammer" over a rivet, which has been pre heated in the forge. Rivet removal will also be discussed within the contextual parameters of industrial conservation/restoration. This may be your only chance to experience the physical and emotional challenge provided by the rivet.

The workshop sessions will be fully staffed by qualified engineers and conservators.

Participants will be provided with all health and safety equipment but are requested to bring overalls or working clothes and stout footwear. An information binder and lunch will be supplied

Numbers will be limited to twelve so to avoid disappointment early booking is recommended. Cost: £100.00
