This article first appeared in Conservation News 74. Section visit to Harewood HouseIn 1767, Edwin Lascelles gave Thomas Chippendale a commission to furnish his house at Harewood from top to bottom. In this magnificent and unique setting it was easy to see why Chippendale is one of the most celebrated names in the history of furniture design.The guided tour given by Sally Wilkes of Harewood's curatorial staff provided many insights into today's thinking regarding this great period. Ian Fraser delivered an extremely knowledgeable account of the Chippendale Society's role and work long with a slide show illustrating various conservation/ restoration actually adapted. The tour of Harewood House was stunning, the scope and volume of Chippendale-related items was breathtaking. It was a truly informative and worthwhile visit. The latter part of the day was left free for participants to revisit the house and gardens and other attractions on the estate. All those assembled thanked Sally and lan for their hospitality and excellent presentations.
