Pilgrim Trust Conservation Award 2002 winners
announced!
The winners of the 2002 Pilgrim Trust Conservation
Awards were announced at a ceremony at
the British Library on 12 November 2002. Four Awards
were made:
The £15,000 Award for Conservation 2002 was won
by Ian Clark, conservator, and the
Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport,
for the conservation of Holland 1, the Royal Navy’s
first submarine, built in 1901.
The Student Conservator of the Year was named as Kathryn
Hallett, for her final-year MA project on lighting
levels for ethnographic collections. She received £5000,
with £5000 shared between her training institutions,
RCA/ V&A Conservation and the British Museum.
The first Anna Plowden Award for Research and Innovation
was made to joint winners Dr Andrew Calver
of the Museum of London and Dr Lorraine Gibson
of the University of Strathclyde for their project to
develop a technique for measuring the air-exchange rate
of display cases, who received a cheque for £2000.
The first Nigel Williams Prize for Ceramics and Glass
Conservation and Restoration was awarded to Kenneth
Watt of West Dean College for his lifetime
achievement in this field. He received a prize of £500
and will hold a trophy specially designed and made by
Wedgwood as a replica of the Portland Vase, a British
Museum treasure restored by Nigel Williams.
