History
Starting in 1985 with a team in Silicon Valley, California, NAVTEQ Maps have a unique and eventful history rooted in technology, geography, hands-on research, and an infectious entrepreneurial spirit. From the beginning, we were focused on capturing the reality of the road network to enable dynamic turn-by-turn routing. We began by collecting detailed data for large metropolitan city areas. After Philips Electronics signed on as an early investor, the company, known first as Navigation Technologies and then as NAVTEQ, grew strategically and established its first European office in 1991. The company's significant growth led to the opening of offices in Yokohama, Japan in 1996. We went public in 2004, and were then acquired in 2008 by Nokia. In 2011, we became part of Nokia’s Location & Commerce business.
Our Location Content team, which leads NAVTEQ Maps, is headquartered in Chicago, IL, USA supported by more than 7,000 Location & Commerce employees worldwide. We also have owned and operated production centers located in Fargo, North Dakota, USA; Leon, Mexico; Veldhoven, Netherlands and Mumbai, India.
