THE NIGEL WILLIAMS PRIZE

It is over ten years since the untimely death of Nigel Williams, one of the pre-eminent figures in the development of ceramics and glass conservation, both in his teaching and in his work at the British Museum, which included the re-restoration of the Portland Vase. The CGCG committee is delighted to announce the second Nigel Williams Prize for ceramics and glass conservation and restoration in recognition of his life’s work.

In establishing this bi-annual award, which has received the encouragement and financial support of Nigel’s family, among others, we hope to raise the profile of our profession and to reflect the standing of our members.

The award is for the best completed object, project, an outstanding contribution to ceramic and glass conservation and restoration, or a significant achievement in conservation and restoration within the last four years.

The award is open to UK-based UKIC members. The scale of the project is not a deciding factor. The work must have been completed between March 2000 and March 2004. An outstanding contribution or a significant achievement can have been made over a period of years.

All shortlisted candidates will receive a certificate. The winner(s) will receive a £500 cash prize. They will also hold the specially designed trophy, kindly donated by Wedgwood, until the next prize is awarded two years later.

The winner(s) will be announced at a prize-giving ceremony on October 16 2004, the autumn CGCG meeting, to be held at The Wallace Collection, Hertford House, Manchester Square, London, W1U 3BN.

Application deadline is 31 May 2004.

Application forms will be available from January from the U.K.I.C office as well as on the U.K.I.C website.
