Rare Eardley hidden behind sketch |

A Scots art buyer and conservator have found a hidden painting inside the frame of a drawing by artist Joan Eardley. The painting is thought to show one of Eardley's favourite models, Andrew Samson, and to be worth about 4 times as much as the drawing - which was bought for £22,500.

Launch of Major Report on Conservation, 28 November |

The Textile Conservation Centre's staff and its supporting Trust the TCC Foundation wanted to use the University of Southampton’s decision to close the TCC to prompt debate around the challenges and opportunities that face the conservation sector. The TCC Foundation therefore commissioned Demos, one of the UK's independent think tanks, to consider how conservation and conservation education relate to wider social and political issues and how many of the changes in the world today will affect conservation. The pamphlet, by John Holden & Sam Jones, will be launched at an event at the Banqueting House, London, on the morning of 28 November. If you would like to attend email:

CTQ trials: New employers join up |
|
Eight new employers have joined forces with Icon to run a further trial of Icon's new Conservation Technician Qualification (CTQ) starting this month. The Bowes Museum, National Galleries of Scotland, the Textile Conservancy, Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, National Museum Wales, the Arts Council Collection, National Museums of Scotland and National Museums Liverpool join Eura Conservation and the National Trust from last year's Pilot to put forward 27 candidates who will work towards this unique work-based qualification over the next 2 years. The CTQ is unit-based and is aimed at those working in conservation support roles- skilled technical and preventive conservation staff, volunteers and new entrants to the heritage field.

For some months the Foundation's trustees and the University of Southampton have been in discussion with the University of Oxford's School of Archaeology about the possibility of the transfer of elements of the TCC's work to Oxford in late 2009.

Over one hundred years after employees of Joseph Cockshoot and Co, rolled this example of a sociable carriage on to the cobbled streets of Manchester in 1895, the collections care department at the Museum of Science and Industry are starting to undertake some vital conservation work to preserve the historic item.
